Elston Howard

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: A good coach can bring out the best in a ballplayer, and Elston Howard was fortunate to wander in the path of a good coach. When the Yankees hired Wally Moses, the former AL flychaser, to be their hitting coach, he was asked to work with all the young hitters. But Wally’s work with Howard has drawn the most praise. Moses convinced Ellie to place his feet closer together, shorten his swing, and focus his head on the ball. Oh boy, has that worked well! Howard has become the brightest young hitter at the catcher position in baseball, and with the pinstripes on his uniform, he’s sure to be playing late into the fall every season.
