Helmar “This Great Game” Card #43 – Elston Howard
This Helmar “This Great Game” card celebrates Elston Howard, the poised and talented catcher who broke barriers for the New York Yankees and became one of the defining figures of baseball’s integration era. Wearing the clean pinstripes and calm expression of quiet confidence, Howard is depicted against a glowing orange and purple sky—a fitting backdrop for a man whose career reflected both grace under pressure and excellence in performance.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1929, Elston Gene Howard rose through the Negro Leagues as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs before signing with the Yankees’ organization in 1950. In 1955, he became the first African American player in Yankees history, joining one of baseball’s most storied franchises at a time of immense scrutiny and expectation.
Howard’s career was marked by remarkable consistency and professionalism. A nine-time All-Star, he earned the 1963 American League Most Valuable Player Award after hitting .287 with 28 home runs and 85 RBIs—the first Black player in Yankees history to win the MVP honor. Known for his defensive brilliance, Howard possessed a powerful arm, quick reflexes, and an exceptional baseball mind, making him one of the finest catchers of his generation.
Beyond his playing career, Howard’s influence extended into coaching and mentorship. He became one of the first Black coaches in the American League, serving on the Yankees’ staff and helping shape a new generation of champions. His humility and steady leadership made him beloved by teammates and fans alike.
Elston Howard’s legacy transcends statistics. He symbolized progress during a transformative period in baseball and American culture, standing as a model of dignity, perseverance, and achievement both on and off the field.
Helmar’s “This Great Game” series honors those whose contributions reached beyond the diamond. Card No. 43 commemorates Elston Howard—a pioneer, champion, and true gentleman of the game.
