Helmar “This Great Game” Card #46 – Roger Maris

This Helmar “This Great Game” card depicts Roger Maris early in his career, wearing the uniform of the Cleveland Indians. His expression is calm and self-assured, the look of a young hitter on the verge of making history. Few could have imagined that this quiet North Dakotan would one day rewrite one of baseball’s most sacred records.

Roger Eugene Maris was born in Hibbing, Minnesota, in 1934 and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. Signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1953, he debuted in the majors four years later, showing early flashes of the powerful swing and disciplined approach that would later define his legacy. After brief stints with the Indians and the Kansas City Athletics, Maris found his stride when he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1959—joining Mickey Mantle in what would become one of baseball’s most famous duos.

In 1961, Maris achieved the unthinkable. Battling pressure from fans, the media, and even league officials, he hit 61 home runs, breaking Babe Ruth’s longstanding single-season record. Though the achievement was initially clouded by controversy, history has since recognized it for what it was—an extraordinary feat of determination, skill, and mental toughness.

Maris was more than a one-season wonder. He was a two-time American League MVP (1960 and 1961), a seven-time All-Star, and a member of three World Series–winning teams. A superb defensive outfielder with a powerful throwing arm, he played the game with quiet intensity and professionalism.

After finishing his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Maris retired in 1968, having left an indelible mark on the sport. Though he never sought fame, his record-breaking season became a symbol of perseverance and integrity under immense pressure.

Helmar’s “This Great Game” series honors those who shaped baseball through talent and courage. Card No. 46 celebrates Roger Maris—the man who dared to chase a legend and, in doing so, became one himself.
