Helmar “This Great Game” Card #25 – Enos Slaughter (St. Louis Cardinals)

This vivid Helmar card captures Enos “Country” Slaughter, one of the most determined and energetic players ever to wear a St. Louis Cardinals uniform. Depicted standing proudly in front of a brilliant ballpark backdrop, Slaughter’s steady gaze and squared stance reflect the grit and spirit that defined his career. The artist’s composition—rich in saturated reds and contrasting violets—evokes the heat of a summer afternoon at Sportsman’s Park. Every element, from the clean white of his uniform to the crisp “Cardinals” script stretched across his chest, is rendered with an attention to detail befitting a player known for his relentless effort. It’s a portrait of confidence, discipline, and unyielding devotion to the game he loved.

Born in Roxboro, North Carolina, in 1916, Enos Slaughter played 19 seasons in the major leagues, most notably for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a key member of the “Gashouse Gang” and a ten-time All-Star, remembered best for his legendary “Mad Dash” home-to-home run in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series, which sealed a championship for St. Louis. Slaughter’s career was defined by hustle—he ran out every play, fought for every base, and inspired teammates with his passion for competition. After serving three years in the military during World War II, he returned to baseball without missing a beat, ultimately collecting over 2,300 hits and a lifetime .300 average. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985, Slaughter remains a symbol of old-school drive and determination.

Helmar’s “This Great Game” series pays homage to players whose heart and style shaped baseball’s character. Card No. 25 celebrates Enos Slaughter—a fiery competitor whose devotion to the game made him a legend of the diamond.
