Rudy York

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Rudy” was known as “the man without a position,” because established star “Hank” Greenberg held down first base, “Rudy’s” best fielding slot. In 1937, the Tigers tried “Rudy” at third, and that led to poor play in the field and at bat. The Tigers send “Rudy” down to Toledo for a spell. Three Tiger catchers succumbed to injury and “Rudy” was installed behind the plate on August 4th, and by the end of August, broke “Babe” Ruth’s record of 17 home runs in a month, finishing with 18, and 49 RBIs, also a record for a calendar month of baseball. So “Rudy” is in the majors to stay.
