Jim Thorpe

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world,” King Gustav told Jim Thorpe at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, after Jim won the pentathlon and decathlon. Jim is the grandson of the Chippewa warrior Black Hawk. Jim attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, where Football coach Glenn “Pop” Warner groomed him in football and other sports. Jim was selected as an All-American in football in ’11 and ’12. In ’13, Jim signed a three-year contract with the New York Giants for a princely sum of $6000 per year.
