The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: This Penn State graduate was by far the best pitcher on the 1927 team. His 6-1 record was largely due to his great fastball and new change-up. Two days after his graduation Joe was in New York as a member of the Yanks. Manager Miller has had him pitch in pre-game practice and likes what he sees so far. He’s just about six feet and solidly built. It is said that he is a good hitter but prefers the view from the mound. Joe has a strong interest in dentistry and never throws a pitch near a batter’s mouth.
