Vern Stephens

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: When a teammate who played with Marty Marion and Stephens, the two heralded shortstops in St. Louis after the war, was asked to make a comparison, he said “Stephens had not as good hands, but he covered as much ground, and he had an arm like a shotgun.” The man they called “Buster” was a rollicking one-man party off the field, often breaking curfew, but when he aimed his attention at playing ball, he won three RBI titles and one home run crown.
