Eddie Stanky

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Every great team needs an Eddie “The Brat” Stanky. Manager Leo Durocher said of his 2nd baseman, “He can’t hit, can’t run, can’t field. He’s no nice guy, but all the little guy can do is win.” In 1945 “The Brat” led the NL in runs with 128, and walks with 148. In ’47, when Jackie Robinson was brought up, the Dodgers converted Jackie from second to first, to keep Eddie at second. When Phillies fans were yelling slurs at Jackie, Stanky yelled back, which encouraged the rest of his teammates to back up the new Dodger.
