Luke Sewell

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: At only 5’9” and 160 pounds, this Alabama native is small for a backstop. He’s tough and smart, though, and many say that he is the heart of the Cleveland team. He first joined the club as a 20 year old in 1921, after playing just 17 games in the minor leagues. Little by little he picked up the finer points of the game from Steve O’Neill, the well-known catcher, and by 1925 “Luke” had become the regular at that position. He’s a good hitter, too, twice batting over .290.
