Sauer, Hank

Biography

From the This Great Game" card back: Cubs fans loved Sauer, and he gave them plenty of reasons. The big slugger hit 30 homers six times, and in 1952 he was the NL Most Valuable Player when he won two-thirds of the Triple Crown. One year he hit 22 of his 31 home runs in Chicago. Often when Sauer would hit a homer, he’d return to his position in left field to a raucous ovation. Fans sometimes tossed packets of his favorite chewless tobacco at him. He was called “The Mayor of Wrigley Field.”
