Warren SPAHN (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: Served three years in World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and nearly losing his life in an explosion on a bridge in Germany. He returned to become a big winner for the Braves, using a textbook perfect overhand delivery and a high leg kick. The big lefthander was named for President Warren G. Harding and his father, Mr. Spahn of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Calls his breaking ball, which snaps down from twelve-o’clock to six, “Uncle Charley.”
