Biography

Centerfielder from Detroit's Southwestern High School. Hometown boy hit .311 as a rookie. Then hit .340, leading the American League in both hits and triples. Had two more excellent years with Detroit before entering WWII at twenty-five years old. Returned to the majors at age twenty-nine. After a rough start the Tigers traded him to the Philadelphia Athletics for George Kell. Lifetime .312 hitter.
