Mickey MANTLE (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: The first time Mutt Mantle saw his son play a major league game was also the first time he ventured north of the Mason-Dixon Line. The elder Mantle was proud of Mick, whom he named after Mickey Cochrane, the legendary catcher who helped the A’s and Tigers to several pennants in the 1930s. Mutt and his dad took turns throwing to young Mickey, one from the left side, the other from the right, helping the young ballplayer develop into a fantastic switch-hitter. If Mickey fails to break all the switch-hitting records, it’ll only be because managers order their pitchers to let him trot to first base after four wide ones.
