Lockman, Whitey

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Little Walter Lockman was hardly ever called by his given name, unless it was by his mother when he was in trouble. Nope, Lockman was called “Pickle” growing up in North Carolina, and when he bounced his way up to the Giants as an 18-year old prospect in 1945, his teammates took one look at his pale complexion and blonde hair and dubbed him “Whitey.” For 13 years, Whitey was a regular in the Giant lineup, and he played in two World Series for the team, in 1951 and 1954.
