Bob LEMON

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Bob” Lemon, the ace of the Cleveland staff, first came to the big leagues in 1941 as a third baseman. It wasn’t until 1946, freshly returned from military service, that he pitched in the majors. Opposing pitchers found out that he couldn’t hit the change-up, so it was either take to the mound or leave the game. The Indians are thrilled that he became a hurler. Over the last three seasons (’48-’50) he’s won 65 games against just 35 setbacks. In 1948 he pitched ten shutouts to lead the league. The club also won the World Series over Boston, 4 games to 2. Bob was born in San Bernardino, California, on September 22, 1920. He stands 6’ and weighs 200 pounds.
