Tony LAZZERI (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: Last year “Poosh ‘Em Up Tony” helped the Yankees win their third Worlds Championship and fourth AL pennant since 1926. Lazzeri, who has always displayed good power for a second baseman, hit 2 home runs in the concluding fourth game of the World Series to nail the Cubs’ coffin shut. Before coming to New York he hit 60 homers and racked up 222 RBI in one season (1925) for Salt Lake City. Tony was tarred for striking out with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of Game Seven of the 1926 World Series, but mgr. Huggins defended him, saying, “Anyone can strike out, but ballplayers like Lazzeri come along once in a generation.”
