Smead Jolley

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Arkansan Smead knows how to hit! Last year, his first with in the Majors, 1930, he hit .313 with 16 homers and 114 RBIs. Before that, “Smudge” tore up the minors. With the San Francisco Seals from 1926-29, Smead hit .346, .397, .404, and .387. He took the PCL Triple Crown in ’28, with his .404, 45 homers and 188 RBIs in 191 games, bettering his teammates in the outfield, future Major Leaguers Earl Averill and “Lefty” O’Doul. Smead isn’t known for his fielding acumen, and that has held back his career. He bats left, throws right, stands 6’3”, and weighs 210.
