Gabby HARTNETT

Biography

A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: The NL “all star” squad is shipshape at catcher with St. Louie’s Jimmie Wilson and Chicago’s Charles Leo “Gabby” Hartnett, called “The Perfect Catcher” by his former mgr. Joe McCarthy. Gabby started with the Cubs back in ’22 and impressed so much he soon made Bob O’Farrell, a highly respected receiver in his own right, expendable. Broke the record for catchers by swatting 24 HRs in 1925 and turned in best year of career so far in 1930 when he socked 37 homers while batting .339. Owns great arm and throws fearlessly to any base at any time. Native of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Hartnett has 13 younger brothers and sisters.
