Del Gainer

Biography

Ty Cobb says [about the 1910 season]: “We were away out in front, and it looked like a cinch that we would grab the championship until Coombs hit Gainor, the Tigers' new first baseman, in the arm with a pitched ball and broke it. We had taken the first two games of the series with the Athletics by big scores, but the team began to go bad just as soon as we lost Gainor. It cracked our infield. Even Connie Mack said of Gainor : " He looked like one of the best first base men I ever saw come into the league."
