Burleigh GRIMES (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Ol’ Stubblebeard” was the last spittballer with legal status in Major League baseball. In 1920, when the Big Leagues banned the wet pitch, they grandfathered in nearly two dozen spitballers. With the Pirates in 1934, Burleigh spat out the Slippery Elm for good. Burleigh compiled 270 wins for his career against 212 losses, along with massive amounts of games started, complete games, and innings pitched. He’s now the field general for the Dodgers, who finished 6th last year, winning only 62 games. Maybe Burleigh will teach them a trick or two.
