A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “If I could paint you white, I could get $150,000 for you,” the Detroit Tigers’ Charlie Gehringer told “Bill” Foster after Foster pitched a shutout against a team of American Leaguers in 1929. Stateside, Bill pitches for the Chicago American Giants, which is operated by Bill’s half-brother, Rube Foster. Bill is a master at changing speeds, has a zippy fastball and a sharp curve. In 1927 he was 17 and 5. Last year he was 12 and 7. He’s a switch hitter, a lefty on the mound. A native of Calvert, Texas, he stands 6’1” and weighs 196 pounds.
