Biography

A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: Elwood George “Woody” English holds down third base for the Chicago Cubs and will back up NL starter Pie Traynor in the upcoming Game of the Century at crosstown Comiskey Park. When the Cubs paid the Toledo club $30,000 for English in 1926 the slender native of Fredonia, Ohio played SS; he later switched to the hot corner to allow Billy Jurges to play short. Woody hits for average not power and also draws plenty of walks.
