A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: One hails from the north on the shores of San Francisco Bay, the other comes from sunny southern California, in San Diego. One is a righthanded slugger with a short, compact stroke. The other is a tall lefthanded slugger with the most beautiful swing in the game from that side. One is the son of a Italian fisherman, the other was raised by his mother, who spent her life giving her time to the poor of her city. Differences aside, both of these boys from the Golden State are superstars in the American League, playing for east coast teams in heralded ballparks. The record books will need to be expanded by several pages to accommodate the feats of Joltin' Joe and The Kid.
