Babe Dahlgren

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: On May 2, last year, “Babe” Dahlgren took “Lou” Gehrig’s place in the Yankee lineup, jeopardizing the consecutive games streak of “The Iron Horse.” In the 9th inning of the game, Dahlgren went up to “Lou” on the bench and pleaded, “Look, Lou, you’ve got to keep it going.” But the mysteriously-weakened Gehrig wouldn’t take the field, and thus his astounding streak ended at 2130 games. Dahlgren had quite a streak of his own, playing in 621 straight games as a first baseman for the San Francisco Missions of the Pacific Coast League. The Yanks are hoping “Babe” Dahlgren can at least partly fill “Lou” Gehrig’s shoes.
