Joe CRONIN

Biography

A short bio from the Boston Garter Game of the Century card back: In 1929 Washington manager Bucky Harris, recognizing potential when he saw it, played young Joe Cronin at shortstop against the wishes of his boss, Senators’ owner Clark Griffith. The next year Cronin was named AL Player of the Year by The Sporting News. Since 1930 Cronin has batted over .300, driven in more than 100 runs, and led all AL shortstops in put outs and double plays each year. Now solidly in Joe’s camp, Griffith has put Cronin in charge of the team as the Nationals’ player-manager for 1933. Also in Joe’ corner, the fans have voted him the AL’s starting shortstop for Arch Ward’s Century of Progress game.
