Baur, Hank

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Bauer was a rugged man with a square jaw and he was a natural leader. He earned 11 campaign ribbons and he was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa. After serving as a hero in World War II, Bauer was 26 in 1949 when he took over right field for the Yankees. His arrival marked the beginning of a new Yankee dynasty: the team won the next five pennants and nine of the next ten. He set a record that still stands, hitting safely in 17 consecutive World Series games.
