Biography

A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Sam is a native of Empire, Alabama, and was born in 1905. Worked in the coal mines before joining the Birmingham Black Barons in 1929. He excels at just about any position in the infield or outfield. Base runners are wary of his strong right arm and rarely take a chance on it. Made his first all-star team in 1934 while playing for the Elites. That year he played short stop and hit .338. Now with the Grays for ’39, he can mostly be found covering the second bag.
