The Radcliffe brothers are presented together in Helmar’s T3 series in Habana uniforms, standing shoulder to shoulder in a direct full-length portrait. The matching white uniforms, red stockings, red piping, and bold lion emblems give the card an unusually unified appearance, while the taller brother’s arm across his sibling’s shoulder makes the image feel personal rather than merely formal. Set against a broad green field and open blue sky, the composition emphasizes both their family connection and their shared place in Black and Cuban baseball.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the white uniforms with pale cream, gray, and cool blue washes, while the red trim, stockings, and chest emblems provide the strongest accents. The gloves are worked in warm browns, and the figures are separated subtly through differences in stance, height, and facial modeling. The simple field and distant buildings keep the composition clear and allow the paired portrait to remain the central visual idea.
The brothers were Alex Radcliffe and Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe, both important figures in Negro League baseball. Alex was a hard-hitting third baseman known for his power and long service with leading Black clubs, while Ted became one of the most colorful and versatile players of the era, starring both as a catcher and pitcher. Ted’s nickname “Double Duty” reflected that rare two-way ability, and both brothers also played extensively in Latin America. Their appearances in Cuban baseball connected them with an important international circuit that regularly drew many of the best Black players of the period.
Numbered #90, the Radcliffe Brothers card is one of the more distinctive paired subjects in the T3 checklist. Rather than isolating a single star, it presents a family connection and a shared international baseball history. For collectors of Negro League material, Cuban baseball, or unusual multi-player cards, it offers a particularly strong combination of historical interest and visual character.
