Helmar’s T3 series continues with Gabby Street, shown in the uniform of Washington in a broad, ready stance on the field. The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. Her handling of the medium gives the card a light, transparent surface, especially in the softly modeled whites and creams of the uniform. Blue accents at the collar, cap, and stockings provide structure and contrast, while the face and glove are treated with warmer, more concentrated color. The background is simplified into broad passages of green, brown, and sky blue, allowing the figure to remain dominant while preserving the handmade, period quality central to the series.
Charles “Gabby” Street was a major-league catcher best known for his years with Washington and later for his colorful post-playing career in baseball. He caught for the Senators during the Walter Johnson era and became widely known after successfully catching a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument in 1908, one of the game’s most famous publicity stunts. Street later built a long career as a manager, coach, and broadcaster, and he reached his greatest success as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, guiding the club to National League pennants in 1930 and 1931 and to a World Series championship in 1931.
Numbered #9, the Gabby Street card helps broaden the Washington representation within the T3 series beyond its biggest headline stars.
