Card Statistics

Lefty Gomez is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Americans in the finish of his pitching motion, body leaning forward as his rear leg swings across the mound. The pale pinstriped uniform, blue cap, undershirt, and stockings are set against a broad green field and a softly glowing yellow-and-rose sky. The pose gives the card an easy sense of motion, while the distant grandstand and low horizon keep the composition open and uncluttered.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models Gomez’s uniform with pale cream, gray, and cool blue washes, allowing the pinstripes to remain visible without making the surface overly busy. Stronger blue in the cap, sleeves, stockings, and chest monogram provides the principal color structure. The glove is rendered in deeper brown tones, while the background is handled broadly with warm atmospheric washes that keep attention on the pitcher.

Vernon Louis “Lefty” Gomez was one of the dominant American League pitchers of the 1930s and a central member of the great New York Yankees clubs of that decade. A hard-throwing left-hander with an excellent curveball, Gomez led the American League in victories twice, strikeouts three times, and earned-run average twice. He won 20 games four times and was especially effective in postseason play, finishing with a 6–0 World Series record. Gomez helped New York win five World Series championships during his career and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Numbered #87, the Gomez card adds another major figure to the New York portion of the T3 checklist and pairs naturally with Lou Gehrig at #86. Together they represent two essential elements of the Yankees dynasty: Gehrig as one of its greatest run producers and Gomez as one of its leading pitchers. For Yankees collectors, that consecutive pairing gives this part of the checklist particular strength.

Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, a Hall of Fame pitcher, and a classic mound composition tied directly to one of baseball’s great championship dynasties.
