Card Statistics
Nick Altrock is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with Washington in an unusually commanding full-length portrait, standing squarely on the field with glove in one hand and the other arm extended as though directing a teammate or signaling across the diamond. The deep blue Washington uniform makes this card immediately distinctive within the series, especially against the green field and luminous blue, cream, and rose-colored sky. The upright pose and broad silhouette give Altrock a surprisingly serious presence—an interesting contrast with the comic personality for which he later became famous.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She builds the dark uniform from layered cobalt, ultramarine, and blue-black washes, using the lighter stockings, face, and extended forearm to break up the large blue mass. The brown glove provides a warm counterpoint, while the distant grandstand, spectators, and buildings are handled with much softer strokes. The sky is particularly effective, with long diagonal passages of pale blue, yellow, and violet creating movement behind an otherwise firmly planted figure.
Nicholas Altrock began his major-league career as a left-handed pitcher and enjoyed his greatest success with the Chicago White Sox. He won 23 games in 1905 and 20 more in 1906, helping Chicago capture the American League pennant and defeat the heavily favored Cubs in the 1906 World Series. Altrock later joined Washington, but his greatest fame there came after his principal pitching career was over. As a coach he developed an elaborate sideline comedy act, eventually partnering with Al Schacht in routines that made the pair among baseball’s most famous entertainers. Altrock remained associated with the Washington club for decades, becoming nearly as well known for his comic performances as he had once been for pitching.
Numbered #84, the Altrock card gives the Washington portion of the T3 checklist a subject with an unusually broad baseball identity. Walter Johnson and Joe Cronin represent Washington’s great competitive stars; Altrock adds another side of the club’s history, combining an accomplished pitching career with the entertainment culture that surrounded early twentieth-century baseball. His long tenure in Washington and later reputation as one of the game’s great baseball clowns make the card especially appealing to collectors interested in personalities as well as statistics.
Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, a successful Deadball Era pitcher, and one of baseball’s most colorful and enduring personalities.
