Card Statistics
Bullet Rogan is presented in Helmar’s T3 series in the uniform identified on the card as the Kansas City Colored Giants, standing squarely on the infield with glove at his side. The pose is almost formal in its simplicity, allowing Rogan’s broad-shouldered figure and striped uniform to dominate the composition. Strong blue lettering, trim, and stocking stripes contrast with the pale uniform, while the green field and turbulent blue-gray sky give the card a restrained but substantial presence.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models Rogan’s uniform with pale cream, gray, and cool blue washes, using the fine vertical striping to reinforce the height of the figure. The blue “GIANTS” lettering and cap insignia provide the strongest accents, while the glove is worked in warm ochre and brown. The background is deliberately simple, with the darker cloud masses and low outfield fence giving depth without distracting from Rogan’s imposing central portrait.
Charles Wilber “Bullet” Rogan was one of the greatest two-way players in Negro League history. A powerful right-handed pitcher and an outstanding hitter and outfielder, he became a cornerstone of the Kansas City Monarchs during the 1920s. Rogan could dominate a game from the mound and then contribute in the middle of the batting order, a combination that made him one of Black baseball’s most valuable players. He helped Kansas City win multiple pennants and the 1924 Colored World Series, and later served as a manager as well as a player. His stature was formally recognized with election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
Numbered #82, the Rogan card adds another major Negro League figure to a T3 checklist already rich in Black baseball history. For collectors, it pairs naturally with cards of Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell, John Henry Lloyd, Biz Mackey, and Satchel Paige, but Rogan occupies a particularly distinctive place because of his extraordinary two-way ability. He is not simply another star pitcher or hitter; he represents one of the rare players who excelled at the highest level in both roles.
Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, one of Negro League baseball’s greatest all-around players, and a dignified full-length portrait well suited to the grand T3 format.
