The pale pinstriped uniform, blue cap, and matching stockings stand against a green field and softly painted grandstand, while the flag in the distance adds a small note of movement to the otherwise restrained composition. The card captures Berg before he became best known as a catcher, reflecting the early part of his professional career when he was still primarily an infielder.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She uses light cream, gray, and blue washes to model Berg’s uniform, with stronger blue accents in the cap and stockings giving the figure structure. The glove is rendered in deep brown tones, while the ballpark behind him is softened into muted greens and ochres. The watercolor handling is especially effective in the background, where the grandstand reads clearly without competing with Berg’s figure.
Morris “Moe” Berg had one of the most unusual careers of any major-league player. A Princeton graduate who later earned a law degree from Columbia, Berg signed with Brooklyn in 1923 and debuted as a shortstop before eventually converting to catcher. He went on to spend fifteen seasons in the major leagues, becoming respected for his defensive work, strong throwing arm, and ability to handle pitchers despite being only a modest hitter. Berg’s remarkable story extended far beyond baseball: during World War II he served with the Office of Strategic Services, carrying out intelligence missions in Europe connected to the Allied effort to assess Germany’s atomic research.
