Tommy Bridges is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Detroit Tigers in a smooth pitching follow-through, his body turning across the field as his throwing arm drops and his glove hangs low at his side. The pale pinstriped uniform, blue cap, and deep blue stockings stand against a broad green field and a softly colored late-day sky. The pose has a controlled, balanced quality that suits Bridges, whose success depended as much on command and a devastating curveball as on overpowering speed.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. Fine blue pinstripes run through the light uniform, while pale cream, gray, and cool blue washes provide modeling through the torso and trousers. Stronger blue accents in the cap and stockings organize the figure, and the glove is handled in warm brown tones. The distant skyline and softly layered sky are treated broadly, giving the composition atmosphere without competing with the pitcher.

Thomas Jefferson “Tommy” Bridges was one of the finest pitchers in Detroit Tigers history and a key member of the club’s championship teams of the 1930s. He won 20 games in three consecutive seasons from 1934 through 1936 and helped Detroit capture American League pennants in 1934 and 1935. Bridges was especially famous for his sharp-breaking curveball, one of the most respected pitches of his era. In the 1935 World Series, he won two games against the Chicago Cubs, including the decisive Game Six that gave the Tigers the first World Series championship in franchise history. He finished his major-league career with 194 victories and more than 1,600 strikeouts.

Numbered #75, the Bridges card adds another important piece to the Detroit portion of the T3 checklist. Together with Goose Goslin, Mickey Cochrane, and other Tigers subjects from the 1930s, it helps document the club’s first championship generation rather than focusing only on the earlier Cobb-Jennings era. For Detroit collectors, Bridges’s role in the 1935 World Series makes the card especially significant within a team run.

Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, one of Detroit’s leading pitchers, and a vintage presentation inspired by the grand-format baseball cards of the tobacco era.
