“Bullet Joe” Bush is shown with the Philadelphia Athletics in the follow-through of his pitching motion, his body leaning across the mound with glove low and throwing arm dropping after release. The pale Athletics uniform, striped cap, and dark stockings stand against a green field and a dramatic blue-and-rose sky. The pose gives the card a strong sense of movement while retaining the broad, full-figure presentation characteristic of the T3 format.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She uses light cream, gray, and pale blue washes to model Bush’s uniform, while darker accents in the belt, stockings, shoes, and glove give the figure structure. Warmer reds and ochres define the face and hands, and the distant horizon is handled in broad bands of color rather than precise detail. The result is a clean, atmospheric composition in which the pitcher remains dominant.

Leslie Ambrose “Bullet Joe” Bush built a long major-league career around a lively fastball and remarkable durability. He joined Connie Mack’s Athletics in 1912 and emerged as an important pitcher the following season, winning 15 games and defeating the New York Giants in Game Three of the 1913 World Series as Philadelphia went on to win the championship. Bush later pitched for Boston, New York, St. Louis, Washington, and Pittsburgh, threw a no-hitter in 1916, and enjoyed his finest season with the Yankees in 1922, when he won 26 games. He finished his career with 195 victories and appeared on World Series championship clubs with Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. (Society for American Baseball Research)

Numbered #58, the Bush card adds another member of Connie Mack’s championship pitching staff to the already deep Philadelphia Athletics grouping within the T3 series. Alongside Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Jack Coombs, and the club’s celebrated position players, Bush helps collectors build a much fuller picture of the 1913 champions rather than simply a selection of their biggest Hall of Fame names.
