Card Statistics
This superb card from the Helmar T3 series evokes the grandeur of the early Turkey
Red cabinets, with warm color and classical composition. Artist Nalali Valiukevich
depicts Hall of Fame pitcher Herb Pennock of the New York Americans (Yankees) in
the midst of his graceful follow-through. The soft amber sky and architectural
grandstand backdrop give the painting a nostalgic, sunset glow that captures the
romance of 1920s baseball. Valiukevich’s watercolor technique brings texture and warmth
to Pennock’s white flannels and calm, determined expression.
Herb Pennock, nicknamed “The Knight of Kennett Square,” was one of the most
dependable left-handers of his era. After starting his career with the Athletics, he
came into his own with the Yankees, forming a key part of their early dynasty.
Pennock won 240 games over a 22-year career and helped the Yankees to four World
Series titles between 1923 and 1932. His reputation for control, poise, and leadership
made him a respected figure both on and off the mound. He was inducted into the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948.
