Edd Roush is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with Cincinnati in a compact batting pose, stepping forward with the bat held horizontally across the front of his body. The white pinstriped Reds uniform, blue cap with red “C,” red stockings, and small circular chest emblem give the figure a strong Cincinnati identity. The stance is unusual and visually effective, catching Roush between preparation and motion rather than in a conventional full batting swing.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the pale pinstriped uniform with soft gray, cream, and blue-green washes, allowing the red pinstripes to remain delicate rather than overpowering the figure. The blue cap and red stockings provide the principal color accents, while the warm wooden bat creates a strong diagonal across the torso. The field and distant ballpark are softened into atmospheric green, yellow, and gray passages, keeping the player clearly separated from the background.
Edd Roush was one of the finest center fielders and hitters of the Deadball Era and spent the most important years of his career with Cincinnati. A left-handed batter known for exceptional bat control and an ability to use the entire field, Roush won two National League batting championships, hitting .341 in 1917 and .321 in 1919. He regularly ranked among the league leaders in batting average, doubles, triples, and total bases.
Roush was the offensive centerpiece of the 1919 Cincinnati Reds team that defeated the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. Although that Series became forever associated with the Black Sox scandal, Roush and the Reds were a strong club in their own right, and his performance was central to Cincinnati’s championship season. He finished his major-league career with more than 2,300 hits and a .323 lifetime batting average.
Numbered #200, the Roush card closes this portion of the T3 checklist with one of Cincinnati’s greatest early stars. The forward-moving pose, delicate pinstriping, and bold red-and-blue accents give the image a particularly lively character, while Roush’s two batting titles, 1919 championship, and long-standing reputation as one of the era’s best center fielders give the subject substantial historical importance. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
