Card Statistics
Helmar’s T3 series continues with Eddie Plank, shown with the Philadelphia Athletics at the conclusion of his pitching motion. Plank’s body turns gracefully across the mound, glove lowered and throwing arm completing its follow-through as he looks toward the plate. His pale uniform and striped cap stand clearly against the deep, shadowed grandstand and bright green field, giving the figure a strong sense of separation and presence. The restrained palette and full-length pose are especially well suited to the stately, oversized tobacco-card character of the T3 series.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She builds Plank’s uniform from transparent cream, gray, and muted rose washes, using darker lines sparingly to define folds and edges. The glove, belt, shoes, and striped stockings provide stronger accents, while the face is modeled with concentrated warm color. Behind him, the grandstand is treated as a broad, subdued mass rather than a field of individual detail, allowing the lighter figure to remain dominant while still suggesting the atmosphere of an early twentieth-century ballpark.
Eddie Plank was one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of the Deadball Era and a cornerstone of Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics dynasty. Over seventeen major-league seasons he won 326 games, becoming the first left-hander to reach 300 victories. Plank helped Philadelphia capture six American League pennants and three World Series championships, in 1910, 1911, and 1913, and finished his career with a 2.35 earned-run average and 69 shutouts. Known for his control, intelligence, and deliberate pace on the mound, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
Numbered #20, the Plank card further strengthens the Philadelphia Athletics grouping within the T3 series. Together with Frank Baker, Eddie Collins, and Jack Barry, it gives collectors another major component of Connie Mack’s championship clubs, while Plank’s Hall of Fame stature makes the card a significant individual target in its own right.
Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, one of the premier pitchers of the era, and a deliberately vintage presentation inspired by the grand-format baseball cards of the tobacco era.
