Eddie Joost is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with Cincinnati in an unusually close, almost foreshortened fielding pose, lunging forward with his glove extended toward the viewer as the baseball settles into the pocket. His cream uniform, bright red “CINCINNATI” lettering, blue-and-red cap, and matching stockings give the figure a strong Reds identity. The sharply thrust glove and bent lead leg create a sense of depth and immediacy, while the visible base at lower right helps place the action within the infield.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She gives particular attention to the glove and ball, using layered browns, ochres, and dark outlines to make the leather form stand out against the pale uniform. The cream jersey and trousers are built from warm yellow, gray, and cool blue washes, while the red lettering and stocking bands provide the strongest color accents. In the distance, palm trees and low structures are softened into a hazy background, giving the scene the feel of spring training and allowing the projecting glove to dominate the composition.
Edwin David “Eddie” Joost was a skilled shortstop and infielder whose major-league career spanned from the 1930s into the 1950s. He began with Cincinnati and was a member of the Reds clubs that won the National League pennant in 1939 and the World Series in 1940. Although he was not initially known as a powerful hitter, Joost developed into a much more productive offensive player later in his career.
His best years came with the Philadelphia Athletics, where he became one of the American League’s most patient and dangerous leadoff hitters. Joost regularly drew more than 100 walks, reached double figures in home runs, and was selected to two All-Star teams. In 1949 he hit 23 home runs, an exceptional total for a shortstop of that era, and he later served as player-manager of the Athletics in 1954.
Numbered #186, the Joost card adds a versatile infielder with ties to both Cincinnati’s championship years and the postwar Philadelphia Athletics to the T3 checklist. The aggressive reaching pose and exaggerated perspective of the glove make it one of the more visually distinctive defensive cards in this part of the series.
