Bobby Doerr is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Boston Americans in a low infield stance, his body stretched laterally with the glove extended toward the ground and his bare hand poised just above it. The wide horizontal format suits the action especially well, giving Doerr’s fielding posture room to extend across the composition. His cream uniform, dark blue cap and undersleeves, striped red-white-and-blue stockings, and Boston insignia create a strong club identity, while the sharply bent knees and forward lean suggest the instant before he gathers a ground ball.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the pale uniform with soft cream, gray, and muted green-blue washes, using stronger shadows along the sleeves, waist, and trousers to give the crouched figure weight and movement. The deep blue undersleeves and cap provide the strongest color accents, balanced by the bright striped stockings and brown glove. The background is unusually architectural for the series, with fencing, posts, brickwork, and grandstand structures rendered in subdued reds, blues, and grays, creating a convincing ballpark setting without distracting from the player.
Robert Pershing “Bobby” Doerr was one of the finest second basemen of his era and spent his entire major-league career with the Boston Red Sox. He reached the majors in 1937 and became a central figure in Boston’s lineup through the 1940s, combining steady defense with substantial offensive production. Doerr was an excellent run producer for a middle infielder, repeatedly driving in more than 100 runs and developing into one of the American League’s most complete second basemen.
Doerr was selected to nine All-Star teams and helped Boston win the American League pennant in 1946. That season he batted .271 with 18 home runs and 116 runs batted in, then performed well in the World Series against St. Louis. He finished his career with 2,042 hits, 223 home runs, and 1,247 runs batted in, remarkable totals for a second baseman of his generation. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
Numbered #173, the Doerr card adds another major Boston figure to the T3 checklist and offers one of the strongest defensive-action compositions in this portion of the series. The extended fielding pose, horizontal format, and detailed ballpark background distinguish it from the many batting and pitching subjects around it.
