Dazzy Vance is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with Brooklyn in a poised pitching stance, his body angled slightly across the field as he gathers himself before the delivery. The pale uniform, blue stockings, blue-trimmed cap, and large blue “B” on the chest give the figure an unmistakable Brooklyn identity. His weight rests lightly on the front leg, with the glove drawn in near his waist, creating a quieter image than a full pitching follow-through but still conveying the concentration and balance of a working pitcher.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the cream-colored uniform with soft gray, blue, and warm ochre washes, using deeper shadows in the sleeves, waist, and trouser folds to give the figure volume. The strong blue of the stockings, cap brim, and chest letter provides the principal color contrast, while the brown glove forms a compact dark accent at the center of the composition. The broad green field and pale streaked sky are handled simply, keeping Vance clearly dominant against the open background.
Charles Arthur “Dazzy” Vance was one of the most overpowering pitchers of the 1920s and one of the great strikeout pitchers in National League history. After a slow and injury-plagued start to his professional career, he finally established himself with Brooklyn in 1922 at age 31. From that point he became the league’s premier strikeout pitcher, leading the National League in strikeouts seven consecutive seasons from 1922 through 1928.
Vance reached his peak in 1924, when he won 28 games, posted a 2.16 earned-run average, and struck out 262 batters. That season earned him the National League Most Valuable Player Award. His fastball was exceptional for the period, and contemporary hitters often described the difficulty of picking up the ball from his delivery. He remained a major force through the decade and eventually finished his career with 197 victories and more than 2,000 strikeouts.
Numbered #166, the Vance card adds one of Brooklyn’s greatest pitchers to the T3 checklist. His late-blooming career, extraordinary strikeout dominance, and long association with Brooklyn make him one of the most distinctive pitching subjects in the series. Vance was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
