Herb Pennock is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Americans in the follow-through of a left-handed pitching delivery, his body pitched forward as the trailing leg lifts behind him. The pale uniform, dark blue cap, blue stockings, and dark belt give the figure a restrained Yankees identity, while the strong diagonal of the body creates a sense of motion across the composition. The warm orange sky and low grandstand provide a particularly dramatic backdrop to the cool whites and blues of the uniform.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the uniform with cream, gray, and warm ochre washes, using deeper shadows along the torso, sleeve, and trousers to describe the twisting motion of the delivery. The dark blue cap and stockings provide the principal color accents, while the black shoes and belt anchor the figure. Behind Pennock, the grandstand is reduced to warm brown structural forms beneath a glowing orange-yellow sky, giving the scene the feeling of late-afternoon light.
Herbert Jefferis Pennock was one of the leading left-handed pitchers of the 1920s and an important member of the first great New York Yankees teams. After beginning his career with the Philadelphia Athletics and later pitching for Boston, Pennock joined New York in 1923 and immediately became one of the club’s most dependable starters. That season he won 19 games and helped the Yankees capture the first World Series championship in franchise history.
Pennock remained a central part of the Yankees rotation throughout the decade, winning 20 games in 1924 and contributing to several pennant-winning clubs. He was especially effective in World Series play, where his control and composure made him one of New York’s most reliable postseason pitchers. Over a career spanning more than two decades, Pennock won 241 major-league games and developed a reputation for intelligence, command, and an ability to change speeds effectively.
Numbered #163, the Pennock card adds another important member of the Yankees championship clubs of the 1920s to the T3 checklist. Alongside Ruth, Gehrig, Hoyt, Lazzeri, Bengough, and other New York subjects, it helps document the formation of the franchise’s first dynasty. Pennock was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948.
