Ross Youngs is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Nationals in a fielding pose, standing beneath a descending ball with both arms raised and glove open overhead. The pale pinstriped uniform, blue-trimmed cap, and red-and-blue striped stockings give the figure a distinctly New York appearance, while the upward reach creates a strong vertical movement through the composition. The simple field, low fence, and softly painted buildings beyond keep the background secondary to the action.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the uniform with pale cream, gray, and cool blue washes, using the pinstripes and darker undersleeves to organize the figure. The glove and raised hands become the focal point of the upper composition, while the red and blue stocking bands provide the strongest color accents below. The background is handled softly in muted greens, browns, and pale sky tones, producing a light atmospheric setting around the player.
Ross Middlebrook Youngs was one of the leading right fielders of the early 1920s and a key member of John McGraw’s New York Giants. A left-handed hitter with excellent plate discipline, Youngs broke into the majors in 1917 and became a regular shortly afterward. He was a consistent .300 hitter, reached base at a high rate, and was valued for both his offense and intelligent all-around play.
Youngs was a central figure on the Giants clubs that won four consecutive National League pennants from 1921 through 1924 and back-to-back World Series championships in 1921 and 1922. His career was cut tragically short by illness, and he played his final major-league game in 1926 at only 29 years old. Despite the brevity of his career, he finished with a .322 lifetime batting average and was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Numbered #142, the Youngs card adds another important member of the early-1920s Giants dynasty to the T3 checklist. The fielding pose is especially appropriate for a right fielder remembered not only for his hitting but for his complete play, and it gives the card a different visual character from the many batting portraits in the series.
