Babe Herman is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with Brooklyn in a poised batting stance, his body turned partly away from the viewer while his head looks back toward the pitcher. The bat rests high across his shoulders, creating a long diagonal through the upper half of the composition. The pale uniform, blue cap, blue-trimmed stockings, and dark belt give the figure a restrained Brooklyn identity, while the open green field and low fence keep the background simple and spacious.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the light uniform with cream, gray, and cool blue washes, using stronger shadows through the back, hips, and trouser folds to describe the twist of Herman’s stance. The deep blue cap and stockings provide concentrated color accents, while the warm brown bat gives the composition a strong counterpoint. The distant fence and trees are softened into muted forms beneath a pale blue-gray sky, allowing the figure to remain dominant.
Floyd Caves “Babe” Herman was one of the most productive hitters in Brooklyn baseball during the late 1920s and early 1930s. An outfielder and first baseman, he joined Brooklyn in 1926 and quickly became known for his powerful left-handed bat. Herman hit .316 or better in each season from 1928 through 1931 and enjoyed his finest year in 1930, when he batted .393 with 35 home runs, 130 runs batted in, 143 runs scored, and a .678 slugging percentage.
Herman’s career was marked by both exceptional offensive ability and a reputation for adventurous baserunning and defensive lapses. His name became permanently attached to one of baseball’s most famous comic plays, when three Brooklyn runners ended up occupying third base at the same time. Yet the humor surrounding Herman sometimes obscured how dangerous a hitter he actually was. He finished his major-league career with a .324 batting average and more than 1,800 hits.
Numbered #134, the Herman card adds one of the signature offensive stars of the Brooklyn Robins era to the T3 checklist. His strong batting record, colorful personality, and close association with Brooklyn during the club’s pre-Dodgers years make him an especially appropriate subject for the series.
