Card Statistics
Larry Cheney is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Boston Braves at the end of his pitching delivery, his body leaning forward as his throwing arm comes across and his rear leg lifts behind him. The cream uniform, dark blue cap, striped stockings, and circular Braves chest emblem give the figure a distinctive late-career Boston appearance. The warm orange-yellow sky and simplified grandstand provide a strong contrast to the green field, making the card visually richer than many of the more neutral ballpark settings in the series.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the uniform with pale cream, gray, and warm brown washes, using darker shadows beneath the arms and through the trousers to emphasize the twisting motion of the delivery. The cap, stockings, and chest emblem supply concentrated blue and red accents, while the dark glove anchors the lower right of the figure. The background is broadly handled, with the grandstand reduced to ochre and brown shapes beneath a glowing orange sky.
Laurence Russell “Larry” Cheney was a right-handed pitcher best remembered for his years with the Chicago Cubs. He emerged as one of the National League’s leading pitchers in 1912, winning 26 games and leading the league with 28 complete games. Cheney relied heavily on the spitball, a legal and widely used pitch during his era, and remained a durable starter through the middle of the decade. His strongest seasons came with Chicago, where he regularly worked heavy innings and established himself as one of the more dependable pitchers in the National League.
Cheney later pitched for Brooklyn and Boston, joining the Braves near the end of his major-league career. His Boston tenure was comparatively brief, making this T3 treatment less familiar than cards showing him with Chicago. That late-career setting gives the image added interest, representing a phase of Cheney’s career that is much less frequently pictured.
Numbered #122, the Cheney card adds another strong Deadball Era pitcher to the T3 checklist. His 26-win season, heavy workload, and association with the spitball era give him a substantial place in early twentieth-century pitching history, while the Boston Braves uniform makes this particular representation especially distinctive.
