Known as “Smoky Joe,” Wood was one of the most dominant pitchers of the Deadball
Era. He first rose to stardom with the Boston Red Sox, posting an astonishing 34–5
record in 1912 and leading the club to a World Series championship. Later, with
Cleveland, he reinvented himself as an outfielder and dependable hitter, proving his
athletic versatility. His remarkable career balance of pitching brilliance and batting
