Earl Averill is shown in Helmar’s T3 series with Cleveland in a strong, coiled batting stance, the bat held high across his shoulder as he waits on the pitch. The pale pinstriped uniform is offset by a dark blue cap, undersleeves, and striped stockings, while the broad green field and dramatic yellow-gray sky give the card a more forceful atmosphere than many of the quieter portraits in the series. Averill’s compact stance and direct gaze convey the presence of a hitter known for both power and consistency.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the white uniform with cream, gray, and cool blue washes, allowing the blue pinstripes to remain visible without overwhelming the figure. The dark cap and sleeves anchor the upper half of the composition, while the bat is rendered in warm brown tones. The background is kept comparatively simple, with a low skyline beneath a heavily worked sky of yellow, gray, and blue washes that gives the image considerable depth.
Howard Earl Averill was one of the greatest players in Cleveland history and one of the American League’s leading outfielders of the 1930s. A powerful left-handed hitter, he spent the heart of his career with Cleveland, made six consecutive All-Star teams from 1933 through 1938, and finished with a .318 lifetime batting average, 2,019 hits, and 238 home runs. He drove in more than 100 runs five times and became especially well known for his combination of power, run production, and dependable center-field play. Averill was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
