Helmar’s T3 series opens with Casey Stengel, one of baseball’s most enduring and unmistakable personalities. The card presents Stengel with the directness and visual weight associated with early twentieth-century tobacco issues, combining a carefully modeled portrait with the richly aged color and period typography characteristic of Helmar Brewing productions.
The original artwork was created by Charles Mandel in oil pastels. Mandel’s layered application of color gives the portrait a soft, substantial surface, while sharper pastel marks define Stengel’s features, uniform, and expression. The medium is particularly effective in recreating the dense pigments and slightly muted tonal character of vintage printed cards without merely imitating a mechanical reproduction.
Stengel enjoyed a major-league career spanning more than five decades as a player and manager. After appearing in the outfield for clubs including Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, he became one of the game’s most celebrated managers. He guided the New York Yankees to ten American League pennants and seven World Series championships, including an unprecedented five consecutive titles from 1949 through 1953. His colorful language, tactical instincts, and unmistakable public persona made “The Old Perfessor” one of baseball’s defining figures.
