Card Statistics
Vince DiMaggio is presented in Helmar’s T4 series with Cincinnati in an outfield pose, moving beneath an anticipated fly ball with his glove raised and his bare hand ready beside it. His eyes are fixed upward, giving the composition an immediate sense of game action rather than a formal portrait. The cream Reds uniform, blue-and-red cap, dark belt, and blue-and-red stockings provide strong Cincinnati identification, while the long diagonal foul line helps carry the eye through the otherwise open expanse of green outfield.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She renders the pale uniform with soft cream, gray, and muted green-blue washes, reserving the strongest color for the blue-and-red cap, stockings, and chest emblem. The large brown glove becomes the visual focus of the upper figure, while the softly handled outfield and distant wall keep the background broad and uncluttered. Small patches of scoreboard color and stadium detail near the top provide just enough structure to establish the ballpark setting without competing with DiMaggio’s upward-looking pose.
Vincent Paul DiMaggio was an accomplished major-league center fielder and the older brother of Joe and Dom DiMaggio. He reached the majors with the Boston Bees in 1937 and later played for Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the New York Giants. Although he did not possess Joe’s extraordinary batting average, Vince combined considerable power with speed and strong defensive ability in center field.
DiMaggio enjoyed his best seasons with Pittsburgh, where he was selected to the National League All-Star team in both 1943 and 1944. He hit 125 home runs during his ten-year major-league career and was known as an aggressive hitter capable of producing considerable extra-base power. His strong arm and range also made him a valuable defensive outfielder during an era when spacious ballparks placed substantial demands on center fielders.
Numbered #7, the DiMaggio card adds an especially interesting subject to the Helmar T4 series, combining the famous DiMaggio baseball name with a composition devoted entirely to outfield defense. The raised glove, upward gaze, open field, and long foul-line diagonal give card #7 an airy sense of anticipation quite different from the batting and pitching poses surrounding it in the checklist. DiMaggio’s All-Star career and place within one of baseball’s most celebrated families further strengthen the card’s historical and collector interest.
